The ISSEY MIYAKE Collection is founded in the philisophy of clothing made from « a Piece of Cloth, » a concept which explores not only the relationship between the body and clothing, but also the space that is born between them. The philosophy has evolved and grown as have Miyake’s interests always founded in innovative clothing combined with modern research and development.
The Collection made its debut in New York in 1971. Since the Autumn-Winter 1973 collection it has been shown in Paris.
The ISSEY MIYAKE Men’s Collection was first presented as a section within Fall-Winter 1976 Women’s Collection ; it has been shown as an independent line since 1978.
132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE is a project, whose first evolution was presented by Issey Miyake in Autumn 2010. The concept grew from research and development by a group founded in 2007 within the Miyake Design Studio, named the « Reality Lab. », whose purpose, according to Miyake is to develop « designs that reflect and address the way people live today » and explore ways of making things that will renew « the possibilities of Japanese craftsmanship ».
The impetus for 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE was the discovery of computer graphics applications that are capable of starting out with a single plane to construct a three-dimensional model with smoothly curving surfaces. This in turn lead to the creation of unprecedented designs that link the flat with three dimensional by folding and creasing.
These designs are recreated using fabrics made of a revolutionary polyester created using recycled fibers developed by Japanese companies and produced with the cooperation of plants in textile-producing regions. These new fabrics are unique both for their structure as well as for the degree to which they are comfortable to wear.
132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE not only combines the mathematics of folding, techniques used in clothes-making and aesthetic sensibilities; but also explores new possibilities for making things. This brand is a creative outlet by which Issey Miyake continues his long history of exploring and challenging the existing boundaries of creation and manufacturing.
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE offers a new take on everyday clothing for the modern man developed by Issey Miyake and his Reality Lab. team. The aim of HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE is to create clothes that show off their wearers more actively and dynamically based on the following three concepts. Pleat processing that achieves comfortable elasticity and functionality. Clothing as products of manufacturing that considers both design and engineering. Contemporary daily clothes with flexible modernity to match all lifestyles.
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE is a new men’s clothing line with its origins in the development of Miyake pleats. As these garments are designed for men, a thick fabric is used as the basic material. The pleats are engineered with a constant width and regular spacing to provide maximum comfort and the fabric we have employed absorbs perspiration rapidly to keep the body dry. In addition, this material is manufactured under the Product Pleats process whereby the pleating takes place after sewing, resulting in lighter and easier movement, carefree wearability, ease of maintenance, and good portability. This is a new and innovative menswear brand that will contribute to the everyday life of the modern man.
Issey Miyake and his design team have been experimenting with and refining their pleating technique since 1988. The groundbreaking method – by which pleats are applied after the fabric is cut and sewn – is a revolutionary departure from traditional process.
The first examples were presented in the ISSEY MIYAKE Spring-Summer 1989 collection.
Since that time, the process has been refined and expanded to include basic items such as t-shirts. In 1993, the culmination of Miyake’s researchn PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE, made its debut as elegant yet versatile clothing that offered its wearer both comfort as well beauty.
The clothing is easy to care for, store, and travel with; and offers a choice of colors, patterns and shapes that make full use of the lightweight polyester knitted fabric. PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE is a premier example of « clothing as a product», something that responds to the evolving needs of a demanding lifestyle and continues to please and delight its wearers.

Issey Miyake’s new project, 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE, confronts the environmental and resource issues we face today, and explores making things of the future. In this project, with Miyake as the central figure, the project team Reality Lab., founded in 2007, conduct various research and development. Using fabric made from improved recycled polyester fiber and forms developed by applying three-dimensional mathematical principles, the new 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE clothes were brought to life in September 2010.
In the development process of the 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE project, attempts to explore design from a broader viewpoint – not just limited to clothing – evolved into the IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting products.
The production of the lighting products involved not only the latest technology, but also the work by human hands. And, at the base of the products’ concept is the traditional Japanese esthetics about the relationship between light and shadow (in-ei). This concept is also represented in Junichiro Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows: “We find beauty not in the thing itself, but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates.” The three-dimensional form concept developed by 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE was used in creating the lampshades, and the original material with excellent shape retention and light transmission qualities was developed.
The IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting products were launched by Italian lighting maker Artemide in April 2012 at Light+Building (Frankfurt) and the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano).
The Watch project has been evolving since 2001, pairing Seiko Instruments Inc. with the creative direction of the Miyake Design Studio. Each year a new designer is involved in the project to create a watch true to the spirit of Issey Miyake, interpreted in their voice.
The designers are always faced with the challenge of creating a fresh design, as well as an analogue watch, that will be made in Japan. The designers also create their own package design. The collaborative efforts of the trios comprised of designer, Seiko and the Miyake Design Studio continue to result in beautiful, functional designs, each of which is distinct and affordable.
ISSEY MIYAKE PARFUMS is a collection that was co-developed with Beauté Prestige International in France. The first fragrance, L’EAU D’ISSEY, was born in 1992. The idea for this scent, whose name means ‘water’, was conceived by Miyake, who saw water as both the greatest material, as well as the greatest source for inspiration. It has had a remarkable influence upon the world of perfume.
The Miyake Design Studio supervises the creative direction for the fragrance at every stage, from the initial concept to bottle design, naming, graphics, package design, marketing tools, and publicity.
Issey Miyake’s philosophy has never deviated. His goals are to create fragrances that convey a message, to inspire people with hope for a bright future, to present simple yet functional bottle designs that are at once accessible and universal, while never losing a sense of wonder. As with our clothing design, we continue to create new fragrances that are not only pertinent to our lifestyles, but are also founded in pure essentials.
